The worlds largest producer of tea is expecting to face a shortage of tea for the first time in eight years due to rising domestic demand and an increase in exports. According to Aditya Khaitan, managing director of Indias biggest tea-grower McLeod Russel, the country should brace itself for a deficit of as much as 40 million kilograms, exceeding Indian Tea Associations projections of a shortfall of 27 million kilograms.
